Built in 1908 by the art Nouveau architect Domènech i Montaner, the luxurious Casa Fuster is a monument in itself and has the status of Speciality Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Domènech i Montaner lived and worked at the same time as Gaudi (of whom a couple of chairs are displayend in the lobby) and is the author of a couple of must see places in Barcelona: Palau de la Musica Catalana and Sant Pau Art Nouveau site.
Casa Fuster stands on the border of two very different parts of town: on one hand it is located at the very tip of Passeig de Gràcia and on the other, it is on edge of the trendy district of Gràcia, after which Passeig de Gràcia is named. Gràcia was planned in the 1830s and 1840s as a small industrial and residential town in the then outskirts of Barcelona: it is a fabric of narrow and short streets, with many small squares whose open-air cafés and terraces attract local and foreign youth.
